But kiss me and I might drop dead

  • We stayed home on Saturday. IKEA was due to stop by with a delivery, but it got all messed up from the day before. I don’t know why they thought they could deliver Friday when we explicitly said to come on Saturday though I also can’t say I’m surprised. DPD is the worst. It’s been three days and we still don’t have our parcel. Anyway I didn’t mind just taking it easy. It was still a bit hot and I’ve noticed that the heat makes me feel sleepy. I took a nap and Quentin actually joined me too. We finished watching Imperfect Women. While I wasn’t a fan of the book, I had been looking forward to the show. Kerry Washington, Elizabeth Moss and Kate Mara as the leads? Yes please! Overall it was interesting enough, but they changed the final twist and I don’t think that decision was for the better. Ah well, I’m still glad we checked it out. I also tuned in for a bit of the Champions League final as Q had it on. He was understandably upset with Arsenal losing in penalties. That is never fair way to go out. At least they had already won the Premier League so he wasn’t too sad.
  • I actually went out on Sunday! I’m not sure what came over me lol, but I just did not feel like sitting around. Q headed over to the Emirates to watch the Arsenal victory parade. I could have gone with however the thought of waiting for hours and being surrounded by so many people was not appealing at all. Instead I took myself to Picturehouse Central to watch Power Ballad. I didn’t even want to watch this film initially; the trailer had been played to death and it seemed pretty generic. And then I discovered that the director is the same guy who did Begin Again which is one of my favorite movies of all time. Suddenly it all made sense and I fell in love. Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas were perfect in their roles. They had an easy dynamic that was fun to watch even when things turned sour. The original songs were also A+ - I have had How To Write A Song (Without You) stuck in my head since. After the film, I ate lunch at Chipotle, dropped off a return at H&M and then came home. In the evening Q and I binged the entirety of A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder season two. It has been a hot minute since I read the books, but the story quickly came back to me. The stakes were ramped up even higher this time around and I thought it was so well done. It ended on a cliffhanger too so I hope it won’t be another two years until we get the inevitable season three.
  • Today marked my new stint at a site called RWE. They’re the largest power producer in the UK. In a few weeks they will be moving to a new building, but they still need a full reception team. All this week I will be with Sonia and Jessie. They will train me, then next week it’s Jessie and I and then after that I will be with someone else until the end of the month. As nice as it is to see Sonia and spend time with her, this site is already not my cup of tea. It is way too quiet. I’m sure that the move hasn’t helped because most people are either working from home or they have already moved over, but still. It’s only going to get worse too. I’m still keeping everything I have crossed that I get this job at the Crown Estate. Klaudia texted me today that she’s been singing my praises even more to Danielle and that she’ll be there in the first interview so we shall see…

Robby has managed to put in a temporary fix for the site errors and things failing to refresh or not showing up where they should! The permanent fix is going to need Mark's experience, and unfortunately -- seriously, this literally never fails -- Mark has been on an international flight all day, because of course he has. (Never. Fails. He and I are not allowed to both take vacation at once.)

The site will work just fine with the temporary fix in place, things just might be a little slow here and there. We'll keep you updated.

We're aware of site traffic issues and are working to fix them for the people who are having problems! (The tactics the damn bot traffic uses are endlessly shifting, and they're really good at looking like real traffic, sigh.)

The main church in Wrecsam has a dedication to St Giles which often indicates a connection to a leper hospital as Giles is the patron saint of lepers. Also a dedication to St Silyn.

St Silyn is an older Welsh saint. It's unusual for a church to have two dedications.

And what a church! It's big and mostly 15th century

I keep thinking about what could have been in regards to the now cancelled BTVS sequel series.

My rambling thoughts. )

In addition to all of that, I keep thinking of other stories that could be told as a continuation of the Buffyverse. Sure, there's the possibility of more comic books and novels, but if there were to be another television series or even a movie set in this world, ownership of rights and expenses aside, I would like to see something that isn't directly tied to the original series. Showing previous Slayers of different eras, for example, something I've seen fans pitching for if there was ever to be a new show in the works. Maybe something centering around adjacent factions of the Slayer business, like the inner workings of the Watcher's Council, the training and politics and conflict of interests it could have, which are only vaguely alluded to in the show. Perhaps even exploring all the other dimensions that are mentioned in the Buffyverse, other Hellmouths worldwide, truly there are numerous possibilities that it doesn't all have to be centered around revisiting Sunnydale.

I still think having a Fray adaptation would be pretty awesome, a Slayer in futuristic world. Since her story in the comic is self-contained and complete, it would make for a nice movie. There is even a short fan film created in 2017. It would just be really cool of a story to see depicted in full, imho.

This sign on the church gate made me grin!

And old biligual street sign. You can see the latinate origin of eglwys (church) as it's eglise in French.

This was on the frontage of an old butcher's shop (still a butcher's shop) in one of the arcades. Bovril is a beef extract which many brits will be familar with.

It's been a while since we've done a full code push rather than just hotfixes for bugs, so we are well overdue! Depending on availability, we're aiming to do one sometime soon; we'll let you know specifics once we've worked out good timing for everyone who needs to be available.

However! The reason it's been so long is we kept trying to get some of the stuff that's pending to "really finished" instead of just "mostly finished", and then we once again looked around and went "oh no, this is a really big code push with a lot of changes". Those make us nervous, because while we do a lot of testing ourselves, y'all are really creative in how you use the site and we inevitably find a bunch of edge cases when we let you loose on new code with your real-world data!

So, if folks have some spare time in the next few days, it would be a huge help if you could spend half an hour or so using the site the same way you normally do but with the "Site-Wide Canary" beta features flag turned on. Canary mode is a sort of "live testing" mode: it's your real data, but running the most up-to-date code.

Canary mode always does have a few glitches -- there may be missing text strings or errors about missing database properties, which is a limitation of how we run it. We don't need to know about those, but anything else weird that you run into, leave a comment with what you were trying to do and the error message you got.

I'll repeat that the "here be dragons" caution that's on the beta features page: some things may be broken, so don't use it for when you're doing something important. But a few more eyeballs on it before the push will help the push go more smoothly for everyone.

For folks who want to concentrate on what's changing, we haven't finished the second code tour of what's going to be in this push, but the ffirst one has a good chunk of what's going to be going live. (We'll get the second half done ASAP!)

They've managed to identify the remains of some more of the ill fated sailors from Erebus.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1m2jgezjlgo

I still recall the finding of the remains in perma frost in the nineteen eighties of other crew members who had died before the final disaster.

One of the archaelogists was from Gillingham where we used to live down in Kent and so was John Hartnell one of the crew members.

This is he as found, well preserved.

And a modern image of John in life. By no means a bad looking guy.

Can you imagine coming face to face with your several times great grandfather as this guy did?
